Below is a "quick-and-dirty" copy of the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System rules/regulations. For the full version of this document, click here! This information was provided by the Hatfield-McCoy Trail Authority.
Basic Rules
All trail users must have a valid Hatfield-McCoy Permit.
1. Everyone must wear a DOT, SNELL or other approved helmet and protective eyegear.
2. No passengers on any ATV unless the ATV is manufactured for the driver and one passenger.
3. No vehicle over fifty (50) inches in width is allowed on the trail with the exception of the following approved machines; Kawasaki Mule, Kawasaki Teryx, Kubota RTV
, Polaris Ranger, Polaris Razor, Yamaha Rhino, and Arctic Cat Prowler. Also, see SPECIAL SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR SIDE BY SIDE UTILITY VEHICLES following the list of rules below.
4. No alcoholic beverages may be consumed or carried.
5. Obey all signs, gates, and barriers.
6. Stay on marked trails.
7. Only enter and exit the trail systems at a trailhead or town connector.
8. Do not enter a no trail, no entry or gated area.
9. Drive or ride at a speed reasonable for conditions.
10. No person shall drive an ATV unless that person meets the minimum age recommendation specified by the ATV manufacturer for the ATV that is being driven.
11. Motorcycles and ATVs must have a properly functioning muffler and USFS approved spark arrestor.
12. Stop when signaled by a ranger.
13. Carry photo identification at all times.
14. Adult supervision is required for those under age 18.
15. Do not litter.
16. Display user permit on your person at all times.
17. No fires.
18. No camping on the trails.
19. Trail system is open from sunrise to sunset.
Special Safety Requirements for Side-By-Side Uitility Vehicles
Side by side utility vehicles which have been approved by the Board of Directors for use upon the Hatfield McCoy Trail System shall be subject to all of the safety rules and regulations of the Authority and shall also be subject to the following safety rules specifically applying to side by side utility vehicles:
1. Side by side utility vehicles shall only be operated on green trails only.
2. All manufacturer installed seat belts shall be in good working order.
3. The number of passengers carried on a side by side utility vehicle shall be limited by the number of manufacturer seat belts.
4. All participants must abide by all of the manufacturer’s requirements regarding the age and size of operators and passengers.
5. No passenger that is too small to reach and hold any manufacturer installed handgrip shall be allowed on a side by side utility vehicle.
6. Operation of a side by side utility vehicle is prohibited by anyone under the age of sixteen (16) years of age.
7. Any operator of a side by side utility vehicle must possess a valid driver’s license.
8. The driver and passenger of a side by side utility vehicle must wear seat belts at all times.
9. The driver and passengers of a side by side utility vehicle shall keep their hands, arms, feet and legs inside the vehicle at all times during operation.
10. The side by side machine approved to be operated on the Hatfield-McCoy Trails are as follows:
• Arctic Cat Prowler
• Kawasaki Mule
• Kawasaki Teryx
• Kubota RTV
• Polaris Ranger
• Polaris Razor
• Suzuki QUV
• Yamaha Rhino
